US food waste management company Divert Inc has kicked off construction works on its planned waste-to-energy facility in Turlock, California which is expected to produce renewable energy enough to power nearly 3,000 homes annually.
The 65,000-square-foot (6,038 sq m) site will capture and turn wasted food from retailers and other companies into carbon negative renewable energy. It will have the capacity to process 100,000 tons of wasted food yearly, offsetting up to 23,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide a year.
The Turlock plant is expected to become fully operational in 2024, Divert said in a press release on Wednesday.
The project is partly funded through a USD-63-million (EUR 57.0m) municipal green bond issued through the California Public Finance Authority (CalPFA) and an undisclosed amount of debt financing from Forbright Bank. The overall cost of the initiative was not disclosed.
