Canary Wharf to turn food waste into power

Demand Logic and SEaB Energy win £100,000 as part of the latest phase of the Cognicity smart cities challenge

Canary Wharf has confirmed plans to pilot a small-scale food waste-to-energy system and an intelligent building control system, after announcing the winners of its £100,000 Cognicity Challenge that aims to identify some of the best emerging smart city technologies.
Late last week, Canary Wharf Group announced the latest winners of the challenge, which saw 36 clean tech start-ups compete for funding and the chance to trial their technologies on the Canary Wharf estate in east London.

Demand Logic will now trial technology designed to help firms curb their power demand by using monitoring systems and controlling non-essential electricity users.Demand Logic and SEaB Energy have each been awarded £50,000 to deploy their technologies on the estate.
Meanwhile, SEaB Energy's Muckbuster technology will bring onsite anaerobic digestion systems to Canary Wharf, helping firms on the estate eliminate to transport food waste off site.
Sir George Iacobescu, chairman and chief executive of Canary Wharf Group, said he expected the technologies to deliver "real value, long into the future, to our operations as well as to the workers and future residents of Canary Wharf".
Demand Logic and SEaB Energy won the Integrated Resource Management and Automated Building Management streams of the competition. The winners of the final two Cognicity Challenge streams 'Virtual Design and Construction' and 'Connected Home' are due to be announced on 7 July.
