Nigeria will work domestically to make sure there are commercial quantities of solar cells available for use by 2012, technology officials said.
Nigerian Minister of Science and Technology Muhammad Kaoje Abubakar said local production was vital to developing solar power for his country, Nigerian newspaper Next reports Friday.
"There are some good research works carried out by the technology complex, some of them are ongoing and all of them have potential for commercialization," he said. "But unfortunately, very little commercialization of these works have taken place."
The minister made his comments during a visit to the Sheda Science and Technology Complex and the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure in Abuja.
Abubakar said engineering leaders must work under the realization that solar power is a critical need.
"This is your major challenge now, to produce solar cells for the benefit of Nigerians," he added.
For his part, Anthony Oberafo, director of the Nigerian Physics Advanced Laboratory, said technology leaders would improve on existing solar cells for use in the commercial sector by 2012.
Political uncertainty and militant activity in the oil-rich Niger Delta region is forcing international oil explorers to move cautiously in Nigeria as domestic production efforts suffer.
