China and Taiwan solar cell prices fall 2-3% in May

Solar cell quotes from China- and Taiwan-based makers have dropped 2-3% to US$1.25-1.3 and US$1.3-1.32, respectively, in May due to new capacity alleviating tight supply, according to industry observers.
At several points during the solar cell supply shortage this year, there was a 20-30% gap between demand and supply, sources from solar cell makers indicated. With new capacity coming online, especially in China, they believe relief is in sight, but that the modest retreat merely represents a stabilization of prices, not an actual downward trend.
Since wafer makers are expected to raise prices in June and orders remain strong, solar cell quotes should stay flat for the rest of May and in June, the sources said.
The weakening euro is also affecting solar cell quotes. To prevent further losses from currency exchange rates, some solar cell makers have asked solar module customers to transact in US dollars instead of euros. In exchange, the solar cell makers are willing to lower US-denoted price quotes, industry observers said.
