LONDON (Reuters) - RWE and E.ON will decide in the next six months whether France's Areva or Japan's Toshiba have won work on nuclear projects worth as much as 20 billion pounds, RWE's chief executive told the Financial Times.
The German energy groups will decide in the spring whether to choose French or U.S.-Japanese technology to build four-to-six reactors in the UK, the FT's Thursday edition said.
"We want to build the most economical reactor, in the best interest of our customers, and it's not only the initial investment, ie the purchase price from the manufacturer," Jurgen Grossmann, RWE chief executive, told the newspaper.
Two reactors are being assessed for approval by UK regulators, the newspaper said.
These are Areva's EPR, a design under construction in Finland and France; and the AP1,000 from Westinghouse, Toshiba's nuclear engineering subsidiary.
