The Indian foreign secretary says the two countries are likely to sign defense agreements and a civil nuclear cooperation pact during the visit.
Nirupama Rao, Indian Foreign Secretary, said, "We expect to sign a few agreements which will reflect the breadth of our relationship and particularly the depth of our cooperation in the defense sector. We are currently in the advanced stages of finalizing a bilateral framework inter-governmental agreement on peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Several rounds of negotiation have already taken place between our experts and we are hopeful that the agreement will be finalized during the visit."
The agreements to be signed include a 10-year deal on military hardware, and aircraft worth at least 5 billion US dollars.
Another pact will cover maintenance and product support for defense equipment purchased from Russia. India says negotiations are still ongoing for the sale and refurbishing of the Russian aircraft carrier, Admiral Gorshkov.
