India may face severe coal supply shortage by 2012

CNBC-TV18 reported that Indian power ministry has told the coal ministry that a severe supply crunch in coal is expected in the next three years.

Industry sources said that a coal shortfall of about 74 million tonne in expected by 2012, which would increase the total shortfall to about 120 million tonne. It added that the capacity of government owned Coal India Limited may not be adequate to meet with the 11th Plan Target. Coal India's production target is about 20 million tonnes per year in the 11th plan.

Sources said that India will have to import coal to the tune of 50 million tonnes in 2012.
