On Nov. 5, Apache’s David Maxwell, offshore operations technician for Forties Delta, received the esteemed “Technician of the Year” award at the annual Oil and Gas UK Awards in Aberdeen.
Maxwell, one of five honorees recognized at the ceremony, joined Apache North Sea in 2003. Following an apprenticeship with a major oil company, he began his career with Apache as a designate mechanical technician.
Jim House, vice president – Apache North Sea, noted: “The North Sea Region is very proud of the recognition Dave received, as it certainly complements the role he performs in our organization as well as it provided industry a view of the high standards Apache brings to the United Kingdom Continental Shelf.”
Maxwell’s enthusiasm and drive to progress were quickly recognized and led to his opportunity to cross-train as a production technician in 2005, said Chris Monk, Apache North Sea offshore installation manager (OIM).
“Dave’s knowledge of the plant developed rapidly, to the point where he was able to take on the critical Control Room Tech role with the added responsibility for controlling the plant whilst directing his fellow technicians in both the oil and gas plants,” Monk said.
The OIMs on Forties Delta noted that Maxwell took all opportunities to expand his knowledge and experience as platform Area Authority, controlling all work fronts through the Integrated Safe System of Work permit.
Maxwell faced some tough competition, as the top candidates from most North Sea oil and gas companies also were nominated.
Bill Logan, North Sea production manager, said, “Dave’s plant knowledge, competence, commitment, behaviors and professionalism led the judges to identify his strengths and to select him as overall winner of ‘Technician of the Year,’ – a prize well deserved.
“This is the first year that Apache entered candidates for the Oil and Gas UK annual awards. We should all be very proud of Dave Maxwell and the manner in which he conducted himself and represented Apache North Sea during this award ceremony.”
As reported in Scotland’s The Press and Journal, John Gallagher, technical vice-president for Shell Upstream Europe, the evening’s main sponsor, said, “It is important for the industry to celebrate and reward technical excellence as well as encourage the new ideas and new ways of working that will drive forward progress and meet the challenges of the future.
