PM Narendra Modi will embark on a rare tour of the five Central Asian countries in July. He will be in Kazakhstan, the region's biggest country, on July 7-8. During his stay there, the two sides are expected to renew the uranium supply deal, sign a comprehensive defence agreement, announce investments and witness the first drilling at Satpayev oil field by ONGC. In an interview with Dipanjan Roy Chaudhury, Kazakhstan's Ambassador to India said the PM's visit will open a new chapter in bilateral economic relations across 64 sectors. Edited excerpts:

What big-ticket deals are expected out of PM's visit to Kazakhstan? Will uranium supply deal be renewed?

The Modi government's 'Make in India' and 'Smart City' projects find resonance in similar programmes undertaken by Kazakhstan. The biggest bottleneck for improving trade ties — connectivity routes — has been addressed. The Kazakh-Turkmen-Iran rail network is now connected to Iranian Bandar Abbas Port, which is part of North-South Corridor to which India is a party. A roadmap for investment and economic cooperation will be unveiled during PM Modi's trip. We have identified 64 projects across sectors for bilateral investments. The deal for supply of uranium from Kazakhstan to India is also expected to be renewed during this trip.

What is the level of cooperation in the hydrocarbon sector?

India is present at the Satpayev oil block. The first drilling ceremony in this block by ONGC may happen during the PM's trip. Besides, the two sides have also held discussions on India's participation in other oil blocks in Kazakhstan including prospective participation in the Caspian region. We are also discussing feasibility of oil pipelines.
