CIAL Wins Pollution Control Awards

June 06:

KOCHI: The Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) has won the awards instituted by the Kerala State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) for excellence in promoting green energy ventures and adopting best practices in managing and treating waste water at the airport. This is second time the CIAL has been selected for the award. It had won the same award in 2012, the CIAL officials stated in a release.
The CIAL was selected for the award considering its effort to become the first solar-powered airport in the world by setting up a 12 MW solar power plant on its premise and modernising the waste disposal operations in the airport, authorities said.
The modern sewage treatment plant set up at the airport can treat at least 750 cubic feet waste water per day. The treated water has been used for watering the plants in the garden and maintaining the golf course. Besides this, the CIAL has set up aircraft sewage unit and bio-gas plant at the airport.
The CIAL is also getting ready to become the first solar-powered airport in the world. As part of the project, the work on upgrading the existing 1 megawatt existing solar power plant to produce additional 12 megawatt solar energy is progressing at a cost of `55 crore. The new solar power unit would be commissioned soon and once it is launched, the CIAL would be the first solar-powered airport in the world, they said.
Besides all these, CIAL’s project to distribute potable water in 3 panchayats near the airport at a cost of `85 crore jointly with Irrigation department has also been considered for the award.
