Gazprom announced Thursday Russia will supply natural gas to Turkey via the new planned pipeline under the Black Sea, known as Turkish Stream, in Dec. 2016.
"An agreement was reached to commission and start gas supplies via Turkish Stream in Dec. 2016," said Russian natural gas company Gazprom's CEO Alexei Miller in an official statement.
"Today Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller and Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Taner Yıldız held a working meeting in Ankara," Miller said in the statement, adding "Gazprom will base its Turkish Stream work schedule on the agreements reached today."
Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed a new natural gas pipeline route on Dec. 1 that would go through Turkey's northwestern Thrace region to reach Greece, in addition to construction of a natural gas hub on the Turkish-Greek border.
The 1,100-km Turkish Stream is planned to have a capacity to deliver 63 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year, while 47 billion cubic meters of it will reach the Turkish-Greek border, said the statement.
The remaining amount of gas is planned to be allocated for Turkey's domestic use.
The statement noted that Miller and Yıldız also discussed the issues of Russian gas supplies to Turkey and modernization of the Blue Stream pipeline.
Russia sends natural gas to Turkey via Blue Stream and the Trans-Balkan pipelines at the present.
Blue Stream, with 16 billion cubic meters a year of gas capacity, stretches under the Black Sea, and delivered around 5.4 billion cubic metres of natural gas to Turkey in the first four months of 2015, which is four percent more than the same period in 2014.
"The parties underlined that natural gas consumption in Turkey has more than doubled in the past 10 years and the Turkish market is interested in further increase of energy imports from Russia," the statement said.
For Gazprom, Turkey is its second biggest market after Germany, as the company exported 27.4 billion cubic meters of gas to Turkey in 2014.
