BAY VILLAGE, Ohio -- Voters have overwhelmingly passed Issue 6, which will allow residents to buy natural gas through theNortheast Ohio Public Energy Council.
According to unofficial results from theCuyahoga County Board of Elections, the issue passed with 87 percent of the vote. The tally was 812-124.
City Law Director Gary Ebert said the election result is a win for all residents.
"Even those who voted against it can opt out and buy gas on their own," Ebert said Tuesday night. "The whole purpose of joining NOPEC is to use bulk purchasing power to get lower gas rates."
More than 180 communities in 10 counties buy gas and-or electricity through NOPEC.
Ebert said Bay Village, although it has been buying electricity through NOPEC since 2010, was one of the few communities not to join NOPEC for natural-gas purchasing.
