Barakah gets Shell contract to smoothen flow of oil and gas

KUALA LUMPUR: Barakah Offshore Petroleum has received a letter of award from Sarawak Shell Bhd and Sabah Shell Petroleum Co Ltd to supply equipment which would be used to ensure the smooth flow of oil and gas.

Barakah said on Monday the job, which involved the supply of operational pipeline intervention gadgets and accessories, was awarded to its unit PBJV Group Sdn Bhd.

Barakah said the duration of the contract was three years from April 15, 2015, with an option to extend for a further year.

"The value of the award will depend on the actual work orders to be issued by Shell from time to time during its duration," it said.

Barakah said the operations would be carried out offshore Sarawak and Sabah, mainly for the operational maintenance of oil and gas pipelines.

According to Rigzone website, while a buildup in a pipeline can cause transmittal slows or even plugging of the pipeline, cracks or flaws in the line can be disastrous. 

A form of flow assurance for oil and gas pipelines and flowlines, pipeline "pigging" or the usage of pipeline intervention gadgets, ensures the line is running smoothly.

Rigzone explained the pipeline gadgets introduced into the line are usually cylindrical or spherical. The gadgets sweep the line by scraping the sides of the pipeline and pushing debris ahead. 

As the travel along the pipeline, there are a number functions the pig can perform, from clearing the line to inspecting the interior, according to the website.
