Alliant Energy fuels America's roadways using energy efficient technology

January 18:

Alliant Energy Corporation, an electric and gas utility firm, has announced that its Heron Lake Bio Energy facility is using energy efficiency technology to fuel America's transportation industry.
Heron Lake Bio Energy is an ethanol producing facility in Heron Lake, Minnesota. The facility produces 59 million gallons of ethanol annually, which is sold to petroleum marketers in Minnesota and across the nation, as a clean-burning, high-octane fuel additive. Energy expenditures can be 10 percent or more of the total operating cost. The company expects the new energy efficiency equipment to reduce energy usage and increase cost savings.
"Installing energy-efficiency technology in our facility is expected to increase productivity and energy savings while reducing our impact on the environment," said Brodie McKeown, Heron Lake Bio Energy plant manager. "Through our continued partnership with Alliant Energy, our company is working to ensure that we are good stewards of the environment and producing a quality product."
The projects were completed under Alliant Energy's Custom Rebate programs. Heron Lake Bio Energy expects to achieve annual energy savings of approximately 2,274,555 kilowatt-hours of electricity. The energy savings will result in avoiding approximately 1,568 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year. This is equivalent to removing about 330 passenger vehicles from Iowa roadways or the amount of carbon dioxide sequestered by nearly 1,286 acres of forest in the US in one year.
"Heron Lake Bio Energy is doing their part to reduce energy costs and their impact on the environment," said Rebecca Gisel, Alliant Energy key account manager. "Heron Lake Bio Energy is a great example of a company that is incorporating energy efficiency technology into their production processes. The results demonstrate the economic and environmental benefits that energy efficiency can provide for the company, their customers and our communities."
