Navy Arrests 2 Vessels, 25 Persons for Oil Theft

Twenty five persons and two ocean going vessels involved in illegal bunkering activities have been arrested by the men of the Nigerian Navy along the waterways of the Niger Delta in Brass local government area of Bayelsa State.

The two seized vessels identified as MV Hanan, which has nine crew men and MV Alezza Lilah with 14 Nigerians, a Ghanaian and a Cameroonian crew members, were arrested with over 300,000 metric tonnes of stolen and illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (Diesel) on board the vessels.
According to the Commanding Officer of the Naval Forward Operating Base (FOB) NNS Formoso on Brass Island whose men made the arrest, Navy Capt. Noel Madugu, "the MV HANAN L was intercepted by NNS Obula at 23 nautical miles, South West of Pennington when her actions became suspicious. The vessel with her crew of nine persons was arrested owing to the presence of Automotive Gas Oil on board."
