Gazprom promises to keep gas flow to Germany open

April 6:

FRANKFURT--Russian energy monopoly Gazprom has assured Germany that its gas supply from Russia is secure despite diplomatic tensions related to Ukraine.
"We are sticking to our obligations to Germany as bound by contract," Gazprom Director-General Alexander Medvedev said in an interview with Handelsblatt newspaper.
There has been concern in Germany and Europe over the past weeks about supply security, with 30% of the region's gas coming from Russia.
Ukraine is the chief transit route for Russian gas, and Gazprom has hiked prices for the country dramatically amid tensions following Russia's annexation of Crimea. The higher price for Ukraine does not represent a true price increase, rather Gazprom is now reverting to "the market-oriented price formulation agreed upon," Mr. Medvedev was quoted by the newspaper as saying.
On Saturday, Ukraine's prime minister warned that supply to his country could be shut off.
In Handelsblatt, Mr. Medvedev says Gazprom serves its own business interest by delivering gas to Europe.
"Gas is not a weapon, it is a good," he said.
