SEMBCORP Marine (SembMarine) has won US$1.08 billion in contracts to build two drillships for top US-listed driller Transocean Ltd.

It is a significant breakthrough deal with the world's largest offshore drilling contractor and rig owner, which has up to now ordered drillships only from Korea.

The contract also includes options for an additional three such ships.

At US$540 million each, the drillships - essentially ship-shaped, mobile offshore oil-and-gas drilling vessels - are scheduled for delivery in Q2 2017 and Q1 2018.
