São Paulo's DAEE tenders Tietê river clean up, flood control

Feb. 6

Brazil's São Paulo state water and electricity department DAEE has launched a tender for a 12-month project to remove silt from the Tietê river near state capital São Paulo, according to DAEE procurement documents.
The contract, falling under a lot of four works, involves removing 446,000m3 of sediment - mostly sand, clay and non-inert materials - as well as waste which has been deposited at the bottom of the channel.
The 42.8km stretch to be dredged spans between the Três Pontes stream at the São Paulo-Itaquaquecetuba municipal line and the Lavapés stream in the city of Mogi das Cruzes.
The hired contractor will also need to analyze sediment samples collected every 500m along the river as the state wants to determine final destination areas that would least impact the environment.
Offers are due February 17. A technical visit is required beforehand, according to DAEE.
Although a price has not been stipulated, DAEE is currently carrying out some 110mn reais (US$45.6mn) in work along 66km of the river to remove 1.7Mm3 of sediment.
Besides cleaning up the river, the overall works along 108km of the river should help prevent flooding in 10 municipalities, including Itaquaquecetuba, Poá, Suzano, Mogi das Cruzes and Santana de Parnaíba.
