Indiana leaders to visit Texas to bring back wind-energy jobs

May 19, 2010

A group of Indiana leaders will travel to Texas next week to visit high-tech companies and discuss "the state's strengths in wind energy development and components manufacturing," the Indiana Economic Development Corp. said today.

Energy company executives, Columbus officials and educators will join representatives of the 12-member board headed by Gov. Mitch Daniels and the Indiana Office of Energy Development in Dallas for the Windpower 2010 trade show. The state will have a booth at the convention, and the delegation will meet with company executives to encourage them to bring high-tech jobs in the fields of renewable energy and components manufacturing to Indiana.

"The growing amount of wind development in Indiana is only partially due to our available wind resource," said Brandon Seitz, Office of Energy Development director.

Indiana ranked second in the nation in 2009 in adding wind capacity, according to the American Wind Energy Association. At 750 megawatts, BP's Fowler Ridge Wind Farm in Benton County is the largest wind farm east of the Mississippi River and generates enough carbon-free electricity to power more than 120,000 homes, according to the Economic Development Corp.'s announcement.

Duke Energy, Indiana Michigan Power, Hoosier Energy, Ice Miller, Krieg DeVault, Columbus Economic Development Board, Energize-ECI, Indy Partnership and MidWest Indiana Economic Development will have representatives joining state officials, the announcement said.
