Chinese investors go to Indonesian coal mines

Tuesday, 18 May 2010

It is reported that Chinese enterprises and non-governmental capital become since the second half of 2009 more involved in coal resources in Indonesia because of its cost advantage. China coal imports are growing. China will hugely benefit as it extracts coal in Indonesia and then ships the coal to China.

Longkou Mining Group inked strategic cooperation framework with Fortune 100 Association and INTI on developing coal resources in Indonesia.

The China Investment Corporation invested in the second half of 2009 USD1.9 billion in Indonesia-based PT Bumi Resources in the form of advanced mortgage bond. CIC will help PT Bumi Resources, its subsidiary organizations and expansion of infrastructure to raise fund. The partners will also seek other cooperation opportunities.

Currently over a hundred Chinese merchants, mainly Zhejiang and Jiangsu natives are investing in coal mines in Indonesia. In general, mines with 10 million tonnes per year reserves involve the fund. A single sum does not exceed CNY 100 million.
