US oil refineries lag behind rest of world for safety

Insurance Giant Swiss Re has released a report showing that the US oil refinery industry is the most deadly, and most costly in the world.

The report states that US oil refineries, compared to refineries in the rest of the world, suffer four times as many deadly accidents, which cost four times as much money as a result.

The problem is an ongoing one, in 2007 the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration undertook a major safety inspection and found more than 1000 violations across the industry.

The report was released two years ago, but kept secret until Friday’s deadly explosion and fire at the Tesoro refinery in Anacortes, on Peuget Sound, 70 miles north of Seattle.

The Tesoro plant was nailed by the state last April for 17 serious violations, and was fined $85,000, but a settlement was eventually reached whereby $12,250 was paid for just 3 violations.

Now several people have been killed and the fire continues to rage.
