WASHINGTON, April 8 (Reuters) - The U.S. government on
Thursday revised down its U.S. oil demand figure for January,
as consumption remains constrained while the economy sputters
toward recovery.
U.S. oil demand in January was 18.528 million barrels per
day, down 1.44 percent from a previous estimate, the Energy
Information Administration said.
January oil consumption in the United States was down 3.12
percent from a year earlier, and at its the lowest level for
the month since 1998.

The EIA's January oil demand figure was higher than the
American Petroleum Institute's demand figure for the month of
18.407 million.
Gasoline demand in January was revised down 1.5 percent, or
130,000, to 8.525 million bpd. Gasoline consumption was down
1.9 percent, or 165,000 bpd, from a year earlier.
The drop in gasoline demand in January coincided with 1.6
percent decline in U.S. highway travel compared with a year
ago. It was the first dip in highway travel in 12 months.
Demand for distillate was also down at 3.656 million bpd,
declining 10.28 percent from a year ago.
U.S. jet fuel consumption rose 0.59 percent to 1.365
million bpd compared with the same period last year.
Below is a chart comparing the EIA's final monthly demand
numbers with the agency's previous weekly demand estimates and
final year-ago numbers:
