Syria inaugurates Canadian built gas processing plant

DAMASCUS — Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Thursday inaugurated a natural gas processing plant in the central Homs region with a production capacity of 2.5 million cubic metres (88 million cubic feet) per day.
The Ebla plant, built by PetroCanada at a cost of more than one billion dollars, has boosted Syria's gas production capacity to around 28 million cubic metres per day, Oil Minister Soufian Allaou was quoted as saying by state news agency SANA.
In November, Russian firm Stroytransgaz brought another gas processing plant on stream in Syria with a capacity of 7.56 million cubic metres per day.
Syria's oil production has steadily declined over the past decade, depriving Damascus of a vital revenue stream.
But its gas production has risen, even as domestic consumption grows, especially with power plants switching to gas from costly and dirtier fuel oil.
The country has estimated gas reserves of 284 billion cubic metres.
