Council approves funds for feasibility study

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Village took one more step towards using wind energy Wednesday as the council approved costs for a feasibility study that will determine how cost effective the project would be.
The wind turbine would be installed to help power the sanitary wastewater lagoon and Downtown Development Authority building located at the back of the industrial park. The study will help determine if the area receives enough wind to power the lagoon pumps, as well as the best location, where the turbine would connect to the power grid, what size turbine is needed and the total cost of the project.
When wind turbines generate more energy than needed, a connection to the power grid allows the wind turbine owner to sell the electricity to Consumers Energy or to credit the account for when the turbine does not generate sufficient electricity. Because the lagoon pumps do not operate in the winter and only run for six to seven months out of the year, the village hopes the project would mean significant energy cost savings.
“If we are going to move forward with this, I wouldn’t do it without this study,” Village Manager Hal Mead advised the council.
The council unanimously decided to move forward with the feasibility study, which will be conducted by Spicer Group, Inc. for $3,000.
