NEW ORLEANS, April 24 (UPI) -- The U.S. Coast Guard has ended the search for 11 workers missing since Tuesday's explosion and fire on an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico, an official said.
Nine employees of Transocean -- which owned and operate the rig -- and two employees of M-I SWACO, based in Houston, have been missing since the explosion. Their names have not been disclosed but they are Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana, the Houston Chronicle reported Saturday.
Surviving crew members told investigators many of the missing crew members may have been in the part of the rig hit hardest by the explosion, the newspaper said.
Rear Adm. Mary Landry, commander of the 8th Coast Guard District, announced at a news conference in New Orleans late Friday the search was being called off.
"All the information we have this week leads us to believe these 11 members were on the rig," she said.
The search covered more than 5,300 square miles of open sea.
The Coast Guard said the rig -- which sank Thursday in water estimated to be 5,000 deep -- has not been located.
