SEOUL, Apr 15, 2010 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) --

Samsung Heavy Industries Co. (KSE:010140), the world's second-largest shipbuilder, said Thursday that it received a 1.32 trillion won (US$1.2 billion) order to build the hull of a floating natural-gas facility for Royal Dutch Shell Plc.

Under the contract, Samsung Heavy and Technip SA, a French oil and gas producer, will design, construct and install multiple floating LNG facilities.

The order is the first deal of a 15-year supply contract signed last year. Samsung Heavy revealed the order last month saying the price will be decided later.

Samsung Heavy said it will negotiate the price for the top side of the facility later this year and will reveal the amount sometime after December.

In July last year, Samsung Heavy signed an agreement with Royal Dutch Shell, Europe's largest oil company, to construct liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities for up to 15 years.

Royal Dutch Shell, headquartered in The Hague, is widely expected to place orders for up to 10 floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) facilities, according to Samsung Heavy.

Royal Dutch Shell is seeking to produce 3.5 million metric tons of LNG in seas off Australia's northwestern coast starting in 2016.

Samsung Heavy delivered two oil FPSO platforms to Royal Dutch Shell in 2002. The shipbuilder developed the world's first LNG FPSO platform in 2008.

Meanwhile, Samsung Heavy has won deals totaling US$2.1 billion so far this year, compared with US$700 million a year earlier. Last year, Samsung Heavy won $1.4 billion worth of deals to build ship and offshore facilities.
