Russia agrees on gas price discount for Ukraine

08:37, April 22, 2010

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who was in Kiev, agreed on Wednesday to give a big discount on natural gas to Ukraine.

According to the agreement, Ukraine will receive a discount of 100 U.S. dollars per 1,000 cubic meters on natural gas, if the price is not below 330 dollars. But if the price goes below 330 dollars, the discount will be stand at 30 percent.

To get the discounts, Ukraine would guarantee an annual gas import of at least 30 billion cubic meters, Medvedev said after a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Viktor Yankukovych.

"Discounts for Ukraine will come into effect from April this year," Medvedev said.

To gain a further price cut on gas, Ukraine has raised its gas import amounts since the beginning of 2009. Its annual import stands as 36.5 billion cubic meters this year.

Russia and Ukraine also agreed to adjust the gas contracts signed in 2009, canceling some provisions on penalties.

Under the new deal, Russia confirmed that it would not impose fines on Ukraine for importing less than contracted amounts of gas.

The Russian gas monopoly Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller said the price cut would not bring any economic loss to the company.
