Kuwait to produce '4 billion cubic feet of gas by 2030'

KUWAIT CITY, Apr 27, 2010 (AFP) - Kuwait plans to raise its daily natural gas production to more than four billion cubic feet (114 million cubic metres) by 2030, an oil executive said on Tuesday.
"This is the first time we set a target for gas production in Kuwait," Mohammad Hussein, deputy chairman for gas at state-owned Kuwait Oil CoKuwait Oil Co
, told the 18th Middle East Petroleum and Gas Conference.
The OPEC member now produces one billion cubic feet (28.6 million cubic metres) of associated gas that comes along with oil and 140 million cubic feet (four million cubic metres) of non-associated gas.
Hussein said the associated gas share in the planned increase is 1.3 billion cubic feet (37 million cubic metres), with the rest non-associated gas.
In March 2006, the emirate announced the the first-time discovery of 35 trillion cubic feet (one trillion cubic metres) of non-associated gas in northern oilfields.
In February, it signed a technical service contract with Shell for enhancing the production from those fields.
Hussein also said the Gulf emirate, which needs natural gas to operate its power plants, will pursue an aggressive gas exploration policy, focusing on the offshore sector.
The emirate plans to raise its production of non-associated gas to 600 million cubic feet (17 million cubic metres) per day by 2013 and to one billion cubic feet daily by 2016.
Hussein said most of the produced gas will be used for power plants.
To meet a current shortage in production, Kuwait began importing natural gas by vessel at the beginning of April and will continue to for seven months, the CEO of Kuwait Petroleum CorpKuwait Petroleum Corp said on Thursday.
Saad al-Shuwayeb said Kuwait will be importing an average of 500 million cubic feet (14.2 million cubic metres) per day.
Power consumption in this desert state peaks in summer months when temperatures hit about 50 degrees Celsius (122 Fahrenheit).
Shuwayeb said KPC signed contracts with three international firms to supply the gas, one of which is Royal Dutch Shell.
The emirate's plans to import gas by pipeline from neighbouring nations have failed.
