Japan, Jordan agree to cooperate on nuclear power project

At their meeting in Tokyo, the king told Hatoyama that Jordan has a large project in the nuclear power-generation sector that may provide an opportunity for the Japanese firms. Hatoyama said such a cooperation agreement is necessary for exporting nuclear reactors from his country, stressing the importance of forging a bilateral nuclear pact.
As for the Middle East peace process between Palestinians and the Israelis, Hatoyama pledged that Japan will play a positive role in the region from a fair position.

Hatoyama also told the king that Japan highly values Jordan's leading role in Middle East peace process and promised Japan's continued economic aid to Jordan.

Earlier, the King met Japanese economic officials on ways to enhance bilateral cooperation and to increase Tokyo's contribution in economic development in the Kingdom.

The King discussed with Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Japan's Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) Hiroshi Watanabe, CEO of Japan's Foreign Trade Council, and Director of Middle East and Europe at Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) the possibility of increasing Japan's support to Jordan's development plans in the various sectors.

Japan through JICA contributes to implementation of training and women empowerment programmes and offers technical assistance to Jordan.

The King also discussed with Chief of Jordan-Japan Friendship Society Mikio Sasaki bilateral ties.

His Majesty expressed appreciation of the society's role in developing bilateral cooperation relations in the various fields Jordan and Japan in April 2009 signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in nuclear energy and training Jordanian cadre in this field.

Japan's financial aid to Jordan during the last six years stood at $145 million and Jordan's exports to Japan doubled since 2007, estimated around $126 million, where Jordan's imports from Japan the same year stood at $372 million.
