Indonesia certain Iran's nuclear programme not for defence puposes

JAKARTA: Indonesia is certain that Iran's nuclear enrichment project is not for defence and security purposes.

"Indonesia believes that the Iranian nuclear project is for science and technology development," said Regional Representatives Council (DPD) Chairman Irman Gusman after attending the observance of the 60th anniversary of Indonesia-Iran diplomatic relations at the National Museum here recently.

Antara news agency reported Irman as saying, Indonesia highly respected the right of every country to develop science and technology including a nuclear programme for peaceful purposes.

That's why, Irman Gusman said, Indonesia consistently supported Iran's nuclear program for peaceful purposes.

"Indonesia's strong support for Iran's nuclear programme was demonstrated when in 2008 fourteen of the 15 members of the UN Security Council voted for Resolution 1803 while Indonesia abstained," he said.
Ambassador Marty Natalegawa, Indonesia's Permanent Representative to the UN at the time, said Indonesia decided to abstain because it believed Iran was cooperating with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and that "at this juncture, more sanctions are not the best course."

On the 60 years of Indonesian-Iranian diplomatic relations, he said the two countries had always shared the same vision of creating a new and more just world order.

The two countries, according to Irman , always had a common perception and view, especially in relation with the creation of world peace.

"Indonesia and Iran are also consistently promoting Islam as a blessing for the environment," Irman Gusman said.

He said diplomatic relations between the two countries were also based on the foreign policy principle of mutual respect.

Therefore, he expressed hope that diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Iran in the future would get stronger and have a positive impact on the creation of a new world order. -- BERNAMA
