Coal prices up by USD 1 per tonne on weekend

Monday, 05 Apr 2010

Reuters reported that coal prices rose by around USD 1.00 a tonne in line with stronger oil on Thursday after a day of quiet trading.

Utilities in Europe have been selling rather than buying to rid themselves of surplus coal.

Utility sources said that many plants in the UK are cutting their projected coal requirements already for the next month or two because gas is cheaper and coal stockpiles are nudging 20 million tonnes again.

Low water levels in China are reducing the availability of hydro power and prompting increased enquiries for coal, but end-users are holding out for prices in the low $90s per tonne CIF and suppliers want a few dollars more.
