China's LNG imports surge 86.4% in Mar

Apr. 22, 2010 (China Knowledge) - China imported 599,740 tons of liquefied natural gas in March this year, 86.4% more than in the same month of last year, according to statistics released by the General Administration of Customs yesterday.

The March imports reflect a 26% increase from February.

The Dapeng LNG terminal, located in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, received about 70% of the country's total LNG imports.

Last month, the country imported 121,225 tons of LNG from Malaysia at an average price of US$6.29 per million BTU. The average price of LNG imports from Qatar was US$12.92 per million BTU, while that of LNG imports from Australia was only US$3.33 per million BTU.

China imported 3.5 million tons of LNG last year, which is equal to 5 billion cubic meters of natural gas. The imported LNG accounted for 6% of the country's total gas consumption during the year, according to an earlier report from China Knowledge. Zhang Guobao, director of the National Energy Administration, said earlier this year that the country will strive to import more LNG to address shortages.
