U.S. coal burn falls 8 percent for week - Genscape

HOUSTON, March 12 (Reuters) - U.S. coal use fell 8 percent
last week from the week before, Genscape said Friday, as winter
weather moderated across the populous Midwest and Northeast.
Compared with the same week last year, U.S. coal use was
down 7 percent for the week ended Thursday, the power industry
data provider said.
The Midwest and Northeast saw a moderating trend, and the
Southeast had below-normal temperatures for only the first half
of the week, the WSI Corp weather service said.
In the less populated West, cooler temperatures and
mountain snows drove week-over-week coal consumption up but
year-over-year was down, according to WSI and Genscape data.

Coal demand in the East was down 10 percent last week and 6
percent from the same week last year, Genscape said.
In the West, coal consumption rose 2 percent for the week
but was 5 percent below the same week a year ago, Genscape
said.
