American Transmission Co. has activated its new 35-mile, $133 million high-voltage electric transmission line in Dane and Rock counties that connects utilities in south-central Wisconsin to regional generation markets in Illinois and other southern states.
The 345-kilovolt line was constructed on an existing transmission right-of-way between a substation in the town of Christiana to a substation outside of Beloit in Rock County.
The main benefit of this line is that utilities now have a greater ability to purchase electricity on the wholesale market, said Flora Flygt, the director of transmission planning for American Transmission Co., in Pewaukee.
“Completion of this project is a significant milestone,” said Flygt.
The 35-mile line is the first in the Midwest Independent System Operator territory that was approved based on economics and the cost of electricity as opposed to the need to upgrade the state’s reliability network.
