Japanese oil refinery Showa Shell said Monday its solar energy subsidiary will expand into the United States and Germany in a bid to make clean energy a pillar of its business.
Showa Shell Solar will set up offices in northern California and Munich in April to sell solar panels.
"With this announcement we signal our commitment and capacity to set and supply the new global standard for photovoltaic panels into the future, starting with the European and North American office expansions," Showa Shell Solar chief Shigeaki Kameda said in a statement.
The company, which is an affiliate of Anglo-Dutch oil giant Shell, will be renamed "Solar Frontier" soon.
It is building a new solar cell factory, its third, in southern Japan for nearly 100 billion yen (one billion dollars), which will go online in 2011.
The new plant will have annual production capacity of 900 megawatts of "CIS" solar panels, it said, adding that the factory will be the largest of its kind in the world.
CIS panels are made with copper, indium and selenium, which Showa Shell says makes them thinner and cheaper than other types of solar panels.
"We wish to further expand our global presence in the future. We are also considering building a fourth plant," said a Showa Shell spokesman.
