TEHRAN – MP Zohreh Elahian has said Japan has offered to sell 20 percent enriched nuclear fuel to Iran to run its nuclear research reactor that produces medical isotopes, according to the Fars News Agency.
Elahian told the Fars that Iran has welcomed the general outlines of the proposed plan. She gave no further details about the offer.
Elahian said the offer was made during Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani’s recent visit to Japan.
Elahian, a female MP who was accompanying Larijani in his trip to Japan, said the Iranian parliament speaker told the Japanese side that the involvement of Tokyo in Iran’s nuclear issue would be “effective”.
The Tehran research reactor produces radioisotopes for cancer treatment.
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad ordered the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) on February 7 to start work to produce nuclear fuel enriched to a purity of 20 percent for the research reactor. However, Ahmadinejad said Iran is still prepared to make a deal for an exchange of nuclear fuel.
Tehran had given the West two months to accept Iran’s conditions for a nuclear swap, saying that if no deal was reached, Iran would produce the fuel itself. The deadline ended on February 1
