Spanish utility Iberdrola says its renewables division has purchased the rights to build the 400-megawatt (MW) Ventotec Ost 2 offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea for an undisclosed sum.
Ibedrola Renovables will take control of the project from its current owners, which include Deutsche Bank and project developer Ventotec. Construction will start in 2014.
Iberdrola has rapidly ramped up its ambitions for offshore wind in recent months. In March the firm announced the creation of a dedicated offshore wind division, which will be led by ScottishPower Renewables director Keith Anderson.
In January the firm, along with its partner Vattenfall, was awarded the 7.2-gigawatt (GW) Norfolk zone in the UK’s Round 3, which it has now renamed the East Anglia Array.
Ventotec Ost 2, which was awarded its permits in 2007, is located in the northern part of Germany’s priority wind area known as Westlich Adlergrund. The zone has average water depths of 39m, and is located 40km from the island of Rügen.
Iberdrola has an offshore pipeline stretching to 4.8GW, including the 500MW West of Duddon Sands project it is developing alongside DONG in the UK.
In addition, the firm is conducting preliminary studies on six projects totalling 1.5GW in Spanish waters, located along the coasts of Cádiz, Castellón and Huelva.
