The European Union (EU) is on track to meet its target of consuming 20 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2020, recent forecasts show.

"These forecasts show that (EU) member states take renewable energy very seriously and are really dedicated to push their domestic production," said Gunther Oettinger, EU commissioner responsible for energy

"Our tasks will be to help all member states not only to reach the 20 percent target but to go beyond," he added. National forecasts submitted to the European Commission on Thursday showed that the EU will actually surpass the 20-percent target and reach an overall share of 20.3 percent for renewables by 2020.

Out of the 27 EU member states, 10 were expected to exceed their national targets for renewable energy and 12 expected to meet their goals domestically.

Only five member states did not expect to meet their targets with domestic resources alone. In that case, they must acquire transfers either from other member states or countries outside the EU.

The EU adopted legislation in 2009 that set an overall target of 20 percent renewables of total energy consumption by 2020 and individual binding national targets. Each member state has been accorded individual targets according to its capacity to increase its share of renewables.

A commission study found that if the target is achieved, it would lead to around 2.8 million jobs in the renewable energy sector and generate a total value added of around 1.1 percent of gross domestic product in the EU by 2020.
