Colombia's military says soldiers secured the release of five Occidental Petroleum subcontractors after combat with their leftist rebel kidnappers in the country's northeast.
Army Gen. Rafael Alberto Neira says in a statement that the five were seized in a restaurant Friday near the town of Arauquita. They were employed by two companies, Tuboscope and Tecnioriente.
The statement did not give the nationality of the men freed Tuesday but identified them as Jorge Alberto Ramos, Gerson Espinosa, Meyer Romero, Nelson Acevedo and Pedro Restrepo.
Plagued by guerrillas for years, the oil industry in the area bordering Venezuela has seen fewer attacks in recent years after President Alvaro Uribe created special military units to defend it.
