A contingent of curious city officials roamed and inspected the Indian River Central School District campus Thursday, not to learn about the educational process, but to be educated on the district's use of geothermal wells.

The tour, taken by City Manager Mary M. Corriveau and four department heads, comes as the city explores the use of alternative energy sources.

"We've had some issues with the HVAC systems here and at the library that will involve some investment over the next couple of years," Mrs. Corriveau said while in her City Hall office. "We're going to look to see if we can maximize our investments using a retrofit that would use geothermal."

Indian River began using geothermal wells in 2002 in a number of its schools in Theresa and Philadelphia and is in the process of adding it to the high school in Calcium. The wells are used to heat and cool the buildings and are seen as a way to reduce annual energy costs.
