BEIJING, March 22 - China's imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in February fell nearly 40 percent from January to 474,412 tonnes, official customs data showed on Monday, as spot purchases dwindled along with declining heating demand in south China.
The volume was still 42 percent higher than a year earlier.
In January, China imported 776,603 tonnes of the super-cooled fuel, the second highest level on record.
February's imports from Qatar, at 150,245 tonnes, were the most expensive, averaging $10.57 per million British thermal units , compared with $3.22 per mmBtu from Australia, Reuters calculations based on the data showed.

Around three quarters of the LNG imports were discharged at Shenzhen, where China's first LNG receiving terminal lies, the data showed.
