BHP-Mitsubishi’s Coal Port Closed Due to Strong Winds (Update1)

By Ben Sharples

March 12 -- BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance, the world’s largest steelmaking coal exporter, said the Hay Point port in Queensland remains closed after shipping was suspended yesterday because of strong winds.

Conditions will be monitored to decide when it’s safe to re-open the terminal, Amanda Buckley, a Melbourne-based spokeswoman for BHP, said by e-mail. Hay Point was closed at 7:30 a.m. local time yesterday after strong winds, Inchcape Shipping Services Pty, which arranges ship dockings, said in a statement on its Web site.

Hay Point has two berths and a capacity to export 44 million metric tons of steelmaking coal a year, according to the North Queensland Bulk Ports Corp.’s Web site. The alliance, or BMA as it’s known, is a joint venture between BHP and Tokyo- based Mitsubishi Corp. The neighboring Dalrymple Bay terminal remains open, Inchcape said.

“BMA expects limited impacts to be recovered,” Buckley said. Export capacity at the terminal was halved last month after heavy rainfall damaged one of the berths, BHP said Feb. 3.
