Angola, Dr Congo to speed up oil cooperation

Luanda - Pana 18/12/2009

Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) agreed on Thursday in Luanda on the necessity to speed up their joint mechanisms to tackle, in an appropriate way, cooperation in the oil sector.

A statement issued on Thursday at the end of the three-day meeting for the 9th session of their joint commission in Luanda, said Angola reminded DR Congo of an agreement on the exploitation and production of hydrocarbons in the maritime zone of common interest, signed on 30 July 2007 and ratified by both countries.

The two countries had held a cabinet meeting on 23 July 2008, and a technical level meeting on 11 March on the implementaion of the agreement.

The thirrd meeting, previously planned in Luanda, was not held because the Congolese side failed to answer, and both sides agreed to meet in the Angolan capital in the course of the first quarter of 2010.

The two countries vowed to continue encouraging cooperation in the traditional sectors of common interest by deciding to set up foundations for partnership in a bid to make this cooperation more dynamic.

Close attention was also paid to the maritime demarcation regarding the extension of the continental platform.

In this respect, the two delegations reached agreement on the setting up of a joint working group that includes experts from both countries, in the first quarter of 2010.

The two sides also decided to sign a tripartite agreement with the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) in view of organizing the volontary repatriation of Angolan refugees in a period of two years after the agreement is signed.
