Anadarko hit pay at the Lucius prospect in Keathley Canyon block 875, with a discovery well encountering more than 200ft of net pay in subsalt Pliocene and Miocene sands, the company announced. The well was drilled to about 20,000ft TD in 7100ft of water using the new Ensco 8500 semisubmersible. Anadarko said the up-dip sidetrack well will be drilled on the same block about 3200ft south of the discovery.

Anadarko operates the Lucius well with a 50% working interest. Co-owners in the discovery include Plains Exploration & Production with a 33.33% working interest and Mariner Energy with 16.67% working interest.

Elsewhere in the Gulf of Mexico, Helix Energy Solutions Group announced a deepwater discovery at the Jake prospect in Green Canyon block 490. A discovery well drilled to 13,504ft in 3740ft of water encountered 134ft of net oil and gas pay in a single gas interval, Helix reported. The well has been cased and temporarily abandoned while development options are discussed. Helix subsidiary Energy Resource Technology holds a 25% working interest in the block; first production at Jake is expected mid-2011.

Helix also announced a new addition to its subsea construction fleet: the deepwater pipelay vessel Caesar, an S-lay, DP2 vessel capable of large diameter coated pipelines in shallow water and up to 24in diameter pipe in greater depths.
