Indian vessel comes to explore oil reserves in Sri Lanka

Nov 23, Colombo: A research vessel belongs to Cairn India (Pvt.) Limited is to arrive in Sri Lankan waters on the 11th of December to explore oil reserves in the sea bed off the northwestern coastal belt of Mannar.

Minister of Petroleum Research A.H.M. Fowzie said the vessel will explore the Mannar basin sea bed to identify oil reserves.

Sri Lankan government has awarded the Block SL 2007-01-001 of the Mannar basin to Cairn Lanka, a wholly owned subsidiary of Cairn India which holds a 100% participating interest in the Mannar block.

According to Cairn, the work programme includes proposals to acquire 1450 km2 of 3D seismic and drill three wells in the initial three years of the eight year exploration period.

Minister Fowzie said Cairn is to submit a detailed report to the government on the exploration.
